The timing of the exchange of a passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation by age is fixed in a special decree of the Government of Russia. The same document establishes other grounds for replacing an identity document.
Russian legislation establishes the obligation of citizens to change their passports on their own when they reach a certain age. This duty ensures the availability of up-to-date information about a specific person in an identity document.
If the age with which the law connects the onset of the obligation to change the passport has come, and the citizen ignored the relevant requirement, then the document becomes invalid. In this case, an administrative offense is committed, for which this person may subsequently be brought to responsibility established by law. At the same time, the specified responsibility does not exempt from the obligation to replace the passport.
The validity period of a passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation
Initially, a passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation is issued when a person reaches the age of fourteen. Prior to that, a birth certificate is used as a document proving the identity of the child. The first issued passport is valid until the citizen reaches the age of twenty, after which the document loses its legal significance.
A passport obtained at twenty years of age is valid until forty-five years of age. Finally, after issuing a passport at forty-five years old, a citizen can use the document indefinitely, since there are no other age limits for its replacement. If the deadline for changing the passport has come, and the citizen is in military service by conscription (upon reaching 20 years of age), then the law allows the possibility of performing the necessary actions after the end of the service.
How does the passport change work?
Replacement of a passport is carried out on the initiative of the citizen himself, therefore, the necessary actions should be taken in advance to implement this procedure. The law allows you to apply to the migration service within thirty days from the date of age to replace a passport, but in practice, authorized officials often recommend submitting an application in advance, since the production of a passport also takes a certain amount of time.
To replace, it is enough to fill out an application in a special form, the form of which is provided to the citizen when visiting the authorized body. In addition, you will need to present the passport itself, which needs to be replaced, and two photographs in the established format.
