Commodity expert is one of the oldest professions, which was effectively taught in pre-revolutionary Russia, and in the Soviet Union, and nowadays in the Russian Federation. The term “merchandise expert” means “expert on goods”, as in translation from Sanskrit “Veda” means knowledge.
What should a commodity expert be able to do?
A commodity expert is a true connoisseur of products, he is well versed in the quality of many products. In a few minutes, a competent merchandiser will distinguish high-quality products from low-quality ones. Sometimes, just one gaze of a specialist is enough to reject leather goods, for example, sewn from pieces of different quality. But there are also cases when it is impossible to determine the marriage by the organoleptic method (by smell, color, taste, etc.).
Then the commodity expert begins to use his knowledge in the laboratory, where he feels confident, since he knows a large number of GOST standards, can find out the composition, determine the grade, and check the safety of the goods. To do this, he must be literate in physics, chemistry, and even microbiology. The modern market dictates new requirements to the specialist. Pricing policy, marketing, scientific research, modern quality control technologies, forecasting and analysis of the consumer market - this is all the knowledge that a commodity specialist applies in his daily work, and therefore he must navigate in all these areas freely.
The work of a merchandiser is interesting and varied
A commodity specialist examines consumer demand for products, forms industry applications for its release, controls the supply of goods in the required quantity and range, of proper quality and on time, checks the conformity of the quality of the goods, which again arrives, with the current specifications and GOSTs.
Commodity experts draw up contracts with supplying companies, control the availability of goods for sale, in warehouses, control stocks of goods for each group. The commodity specialist is responsible for compliance with the rules for storing packaging materials and goods.
