The Greek word for hydrology is a symbiosis of two concepts: hydor - water and logos - teaching. These facilities are sources of drinking water and transport arteries, used for irrigation of lands, fishing, transportation of people and goods.

A hydrologist is a specialist who studies the processes that are associated with water bodies on the Earth's surface and occur in them. But hydrologists also have their own specialization. Those of them, who are engaged in land hydrology, study those local water bodies - natural and artificial, which are located on land. These are rivers, lakes and reservoirs closely related to human activities. Therefore, it is of interest to assess these objects, which, in fact, are a natural resource, this assessment includes the study of the water regime, the calculation of water reserves and flows. Hydrologists working in this direction monitor the observance of the water balance, limit the impact of economic activities on the environment, participate in the management, consumption and distribution of the region's water resources.

The specialty oceanology studies the processes that occur in the seas and oceans, which are huge water masses that determine the climate and the existence of all ecosystems on the planet. Hydrometry is another specialty of a hydrologist, in this case he is engaged in calculations and obtaining characteristics of water reserves, including those that are in motion. This specialty finds practical application in the construction of hydraulic facilities, bridges, dams, tracks and pipelines.
Hydrophysicists, hydrochemists and hydrobiologists study the physical and chemical properties of natural water bodies, the biological processes taking place in it. Hydrogeologists study the patterns of changes in water bodies in time with reference to those geological processes that have taken place and are happening on Earth.
