Instructions

Step 1

First of all, you need to contact the FMS (Office of the Federal Migration Service) at the place of registration. This must be done within 1 month from the date of marriage registration. If you miss this deadline, you risk being fined in accordance with Russian law.

Step 2

To obtain a new passport in connection with marriage, the employees of the FMS will need to provide the following documents:

-old passport;

-2 photographs (color or black-and-white) 35 * 45 mm in size;

- marriage certificate;

-receipt of payment of the duty;

- an application for a change of surname.

Step 3

From the moment all the documents are submitted, the FMS is obliged to issue you a new passport within 10 days. In the event that this did not happen, you have the right to file a complaint with a higher division of the FMS. The only exception is the case when you change your passport not at the place of registration, but at the place of actual residence. In this case, the period of passport exchange is 2 months from the date of submission of documents.

Step 4

If necessary, the employees of the FMS can give you a certificate stating that the identity document has been handed over for exchange.

Step 5

If you want to take a double surname, then do not forget that you cannot do it yourself. In this case, your spouse must also have a double surname. If he agrees to this, then when submitting an application for registration of marriage at the registry office, you must indicate this.

Step 6

After you get your passport with a new surname in your hands, remember that this was only the first step in a long journey of reissuing documents. You will need to replace your foreign passport, certificate of state pension insurance, compulsory medical insurance policy, TIN, driver's license, and also make a record of the change of surname in the work book (at the place of work), the record book (at the place of study), and so on.
