The international passport is valid for the period for which it is issued. The current legislation provides for the issuance of an old passport, valid for five years, as well as a new passport, which is valid for ten years.
The main normative act regulating the validity period of foreign passports for citizens of the Russian Federation is Federal Law of 15.08.1996 N 114-FZ. At the same time, by the specified document, the validity of the passport is made dependent on the type of document proving the identity of a citizen of our country abroad. Today, any person has the opportunity to issue an old-style foreign passport, which has some restrictions, but is usually produced in a shorter time. More promising is to order a new passport, which contains information about a person's biometric data. Such a document meets all international standards, it can be used freely for any trip abroad.
For how long are different types of passports issued?
The validity periods of the described foreign passports are enshrined in Article 10 of the said law. So, an old-style international passport, which does not contain any information about a person's biometric data, is valid for five years from the date of its issuance. If a citizen draws up a document of a new type, then the latter will be valid for a ten-year period, and will also provide numerous additional opportunities. It is quite simple to determine the validity of the available passport, you just need to add the specified period to the date of the beginning of its validity.
Features of the disposal of an invalid passport
In the event of a change in a foreign passport due to the expiration of its validity period, certain peculiarities must be taken into account. So, some citizens try to apply for a new passport in advance so as not to find themselves in a situation where they need to leave the country in the absence of a valid document. For such applicants, it is mandatory to attach the old passport to the application when contacting the migration service authorities, other authorized bodies. If the available passport is invalid at the time of application, then it is not necessary to present it, since this document has no legal force. It should be noted that it will not be possible to keep a valid passport for the period of making a new document, since it is legally prohibited to issue an identity document of this type without first withdrawing the previously received one.
