A bit of history

This technique was invented back in the 80s of the last century by student Francesco Cirillo. He lagged noticeably behind his fellow students in his studies, although he devoted a lot of time to her. Frequent failures led him to analyze his educational activities. As a result, Cirillo found distractions interfering with his studies. And he made a deal with himself: study without distraction for 10 minutes. And the time of his short lessons was measured by a timer in the form of a tomato. Hence, by the way, the name of the method.

For the first time, Cirillo lost an internal dispute. But later, having developed the short sprint technique a little, he achieved success in his studies and future career.

Description

The essence of the method is that the working time must be divided into equal segments. And alternate work and rest. This approach to the organization of the process helps to focus the human brain on important matters and ignore the insignificant.

Each such segment, or sprint, is called a tomato. It usually lasts 25 minutes. It is recommended to work on a timer, without being distracted by extraneous matters. Then you can take a break for 5 minutes. And again the sprint. After four such tomatoes, you can rest for 15 minutes.

pros

  • As practice shows, working in short sprints, giving a total of 2-3 hours, is much more effective than a 6-7-hour process in terms of results.
  • Since there is a clear alternation of work and rest, the brain is not overloaded, and the person himself remains vigorous.
  • The tomato method increases concentration of attention, that is, it fights the inveterate enemy of labor efficiency - scattered attention.
  • Not only is it a great way to manage time and accomplish important tasks, but it is also a great exercise in self-discipline.

Minuses

  • The disadvantages of the method include the impossibility of alternating work and rest in the form of sprints and breaks. For example, call-center telephonists, service personnel and salespeople, alas, cannot use this technique.
  • Technique is not suitable for people of creative professions. Since inspiration plays an important role in their activities, and subordinating oneself to certain work cycles means reducing creativity to automatism.
