Nowadays, there is a large number of different documentation, and this applies not only to organizations, but also to ordinary citizens. It is not always easy to figure out why this or that "piece of paper" is needed.

The abbreviation TIN hides the identification number of a citizen taxpayer registered and residing in Russia. A similar code is also given to organizations - both individual entrepreneurs and legal entities. But this will be discussed in more detail a little later. First of all, it is necessary to understand in more detail what the TIN exists for.

Why do you need a TIN?

Thanks to this number, which is unique for an individual or an enterprise, the correct and orderly activity of the tax authorities of the Russian Federation is possible. Any working citizen of our country should have such a document, not to mention legal entities and individual entrepreneurs. Using the INN, the employees of the organizations responsible for this carry out the appropriate tax deductions from the income of an individual and a company.

The certificate of registration of an individual with the tax authority, where the TIN is indicated, is one of the mandatory documents for hiring.

Interestingly, in the legislation of the Russian Federation there is no norm that gives the right to tax authorities to urge citizens to receive a TIN on a mandatory basis. It turns out that a person may well not have this personal code if, for example, he has not worked anywhere or is working unofficially.

TIN types

There are two types of TIN - consisting of 10 characters, created for legal entities, and 12 characters, assigned to individuals.

The taxpayer identification number is not just a set of numbers, but a set of certain indicators. The first four characters in the TIN indicate the code of a particular tax office whose employees issued the document. The next five numbers (for organizations - six) are directly the unique number itself, assigned to a person or company.

You can get the TIN at the tax office at the place of residence of an individual or at the place of registration of the relevant organization.

The remaining one or two digits are called "control". They are needed so that, if necessary, you can check the correctness of the TIN.

How many TIN can one person have?

Only one tax number can be assigned to one person or company. In case of loss of the registration certificate, you should visit the subdivision of the Federal Tax Service at the place of registration and fill out an application form with a request to issue a duplicate of the document. This service, in contrast to the initial receipt of the TIN, is implemented on a paid basis.

You will also have to resort to such a procedure in the event of a change in personal information (full name) and when moving to another place of residence.

How can I find out my TIN?

To do this, it will be enough to look at the certificate of registration with the tax authority, which at one time was issued to you in the corresponding regional division of the Federal Tax Service at your request.

If, for some reason, this action is impossible, and the TIN is urgently needed, you can use the Internet resources. On the official website of the tax service there is a special form, by entering your passport data, you will receive the desired information.
