Step 1

Determine the object of assortment analysis. Any product category, nomenclature unit, group or subgroup of goods can act as the unit under study. If your company is a wholesaler, do research on customers, debtors, and suppliers. Please note that if your goal is assortment management, then it is better to analyze the item item, i.e. any commodity item. If you are interested in the structure of the assortment, then pay special attention to the product category.

Step 2

Highlight the parameter by which further analysis will be carried out. These can be gross income, sales volume, average product order, total number of orders and their volume. You can evaluate several parameters at the same time. In this case, the data obtained for each parameter are compared with other results. Calculate the total value of the selected characteristic.

Step 3

Determine the percentage of each item relative to the final result. This will clearly demonstrate to you which product group or nomenclature unit brings the greatest income, requires the most costs, etc.

Step 4

Rank the objects of analysis. Arrange the investigated positions in descending order. The principle that is responsible for the position of a particular category will be the parameter you have selected.

Step 5

Calculate the proportion with the cumulative analysis result. To do this, opposite the top category, put the value of the share identified in the previous stages. Opposite the second category, add the value of the previous one to its immediate share, etc. As a result, you should get 100% on the bottom line.

Distribute product categories into groups. Most often, from 2 to 4 aggregates are distinguished. From which group you assign this or that category, its further fate and ways of managing it depend.
