In order to work in a good publishing house, it is not at all necessary to have a journalism education. You can qualify for a vacancy in a glossy magazine if you can write well and be more persistent than enterprising competitors. And if your writing talent depends on your personal abilities, then the job search itself should proceed according to a certain plan.
Instructions
Step 1
Decide on a genre. Think well and analyze your own knowledge and capabilities. If you are well versed in computers, mobile and household appliances, then you should not go for an interview in a women's magazine. Assess your capabilities realistically. If you've ever ridden a horse, it doesn't mean that you can write for an animal magazine. It is good if you have some highly specific knowledge and skills. This will be an added plus that will help you find a job faster.
Step 2
Take a closer look at the magazines. Read several publications on your chosen specificity. Think about which one you could write for. For example, if you wanted to do a news search or interview, then pay attention to the key in which the articles are written. There are many magazines that print various gossip and speculation about famous people. Think about it - perhaps this kind of work does not suit you according to moral criteria.
Step 3
When you have selected the most interesting publications for yourself, start writing a test article. Pick a topic that is familiar to you. Try to write a short but informative and engaging text. Even if you have a lot to tell, try to set boundaries for yourself in 3-5 thousand signs. Too long texts are tiring, and the editor may end up reading your article in the middle. Don't send your work straight away to a publisher. Reread it in a couple of days. Thus, it will be easier to notice your shortcomings and mistakes. It will be frustrating to fail because of your own inattention. After the article is edited, submit it to several magazines you like. And be sure to write a short resume so the potential employer can have an idea of who he is dealing with.
Step 4
If you are contacted to continue cooperation, listen carefully to the task, discuss the terms and requirements for the material. Responsibly approach the task. Even if after that you will be denied a job, do not despair, try your hand at another publication.
Step 5
If the editor likes your work, but you remain a freelance, then be patient. Complete a few more assignments before inquiring about possible employment on the magazine's staff. However, such a conversation should not be delayed. This will demonstrate to your superiors that you are willing to work and move up the career ladder, as well as the intentions of the employer.
