After completing work on a Ph. D. thesis, a postgraduate student must complete an abstract. This is a summary of the main results of the work performed, presented in expanded form in the dissertation. Despite the insignificant volume, it is rather difficult to present scientific results in a concise form. Therefore, you need to carefully prepare.
What is an abstract and how is it written
The abstract has a rigidly established framework for the design, which are determined by the Higher Attestation Commission. Therefore, it will be useful to first go to the VAK website and carefully read all the information on the design of the abstract. There you can also download GOST R 7.0.11-2011, in accordance with which you will draw up the text. Please note that your abstract is the "face" of the dissertation, and it will be read by all members of the dissertation council. Strict structuredness is one of the prerequisites for writing an abstract.
Title page
The title page must contain the name of the job, the code of the specialty, the name of the city in which the defense will take place. In the upper right corner, you must put your signature, otherwise the abstract will not be considered valid. On the reverse side of the title page, it is indicated on the basis of which higher educational institution the work was done, the department, the name of the scientific supervisor, information about the official opponents, the leading organization, the date, place and time of defense. Also on this page must be signed by the academic secretary of the dissertation council, in which the defense will take place. When you indicate a dissertation council, be sure to write its number. The date of sending the abstract is indicated in the lower left corner.
The structure of the abstract
The structure of the abstract consists of an introductory part and a main part, after which a list of publications is indicated, consisting of articles in scientific publications recommended by the Higher Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. The introductory part is a general characteristic of the work, including the relevance of the research, scientific novelty, object, subject, purpose of the work, material and methodological base of the research. Separately, it is necessary to indicate the step-by-step methodology that you used in the analysis of the material. The introductory part also defines the theoretical and practical significance of the dissertation, indicates where and how the research results were tested. Be sure to write the provisions to be defended. This is an important part of the abstract, as it reflects in a concise form the results of the research. In the conclusion of the introductory part, the structure of the work is briefly described.
The main part is the content of the work. It is necessary to write the title of each chapter and the number of paragraphs. Further information is given on the content of the chapter, its theoretical and practical content. You can include tables, diagrams and illustrations in the text for a better visual perception of the material.
Pay attention to the external design of the abstract. Accurate, high-quality print is an indicator of your seriousness in research. The printing house offers a variety of colors for the cover, but it is better to choose a dull monochromatic range. When writing your abstract, stick to a strictly scientific style. If you doubt the level of your stylistic literacy, seek help from a typography editor, who will not only check the text, but also form the layout of the abstract.
